Bangladesh

Dear friends, We cannot leave all these important matters to the two governments. No mention of protecting minorities and ethnic groups rights, no mention of their special needs given they traditionally farm and hunt in a manner peculiar to themselves, no mention of sending development money to these 'lesser' corners to bring decent livelihood and education for the children and care for the elderly and medical services. It will cost money to station troops out there and the locals will suffer… Continue

Not Not-Buddhism (Ch'an - Zen) group in formation

Dear friends, I wanted to share with you this speech that moved me deeply and has influenced my life since I first read it, during the spring of 1977, in Chile. At the time Silo made this first public address, the military dictatorship then in power in Argentina had banned all public gatherings in urban areas. Consequently, a bleak spot known as Punta de Vacas, high in the Andes Mountains at the border between Argentina and Chile, was chosen as the location for the speech. Early in the morni… Continue

obama strasburg

Obama did very well in his big speech in Strasbough - and his highlighting of the nuclear weapons issue was especially notable - but when asked how he was going to defeat poverty he could only speak about the poor people in poor countries (not specifying they were only economically poor) as markets. They had to be brought into the market then they could buy things and be like people in the developed world - happy consumers. I know this is a simplification but he really stalled. The answer surel… Continue

Considering the Old on the Way to the New: 2008-2009

Considering the Old on the Way to the New: 2008-2009 It’s the last day of the Old Year. Tradition - if nothing else such as dire necessity - dictates that a look back over the past year takes place and a formulation of a plan for 2009 is laid, or at least the bare bones of a plan. In general I have a very good feeling about the passing year - and that’s despite Kenya, Missile Sites, the Congo, Somalia, India-Pakistan, and now Palestine-Israel. In January 2008 as chairman of the Humanist Assoc… Continue

Despite all, the US will remain the superpower...?

Hi pals, Introductory note from our side... Re: Despite all, the US will remain the superpower...? It’s an old take on the issue of US domination and indeed that cute phrase rings true: “But when the tide laps at Gulliver's waistline, it usually means the Lilliputians are already 10 feet under.” The last bank, the last multi-national standing buys everything else and Bingo, Bob’s your uncle - or Sam in this case. However, what if your bottom line is not power, money power, economic might, mi… Continue

Iran - Absolutely Not

Humanize Asia Hi All, The following letter-to-the-editor appeared in the South China Morning Post today Sunday 22nd - perfect to mark the Czech Hunger Strike protest. Bush’s recent comments in Germany that again threaten Iran come at a time when the European Union is actively seeking a diplomatic solution to the Iran crisis. The European Foreign High Representative for Foreign and Security policy, Javier Solana is due to travel to Tehran this weekend (22 June, 2008) to offer the governm… Continue
